Three at Petroglyph Point section of the Lava Beds National Monument a former island we saw ancient carvings. In the walls high above flew Prairie Falcons. In the large monolith there were cracks where we found a female Great Horned Owl.There was a male at the far end of the wall. The two kept calling two each other starting at twilight.

Petroglyphs hint at earlier cultures. Later, homesteaders and outlaws found refuge here. You can see over 1,500 dinosaur fossils exposed on the cliff face inside the Quarry Exhibit Hall. The park also preserves traces left by earlier peoples who inhabited the area. Several petroglyph sites are easily viewed.
