Abbotts Lagoon in Point Reyes

The 200 acre lagoon complex is fed by two fresh water ponds that attract of waterfowl and wildlife. Western Grebes, Pied-Billed Grebes, Coots, Caspian Terns, the endangered Snowy Plover and several migratory bird species call Abbotts Lagoon home. These photos were taken August on a fog ladden day.

Equipment Demonstration: Artisans' Co-op, Bodega, July 7th

I will be part of the Artisans' Co-op Showcase: Glass, Photography and Wood on July 7th. I will be demonstrating photography equipment to capture birds in flight. Sutter Buttes

The Sutter Buttes are a small circular complex of eroded volcanic lava domes which rise as buttes above the flat plains of the Sacramento Valley in Sutter County, Northern California.

In the early morning there is a low fog surrounding the area. After photographing in the Gray Lodge Wildlife area the sun was just starting to set. I headed out and could hear the Sandhill cranes in the distance. The sky turned into a fire ball with the Sutter Buttes being reflected on a large pond.

Rare Super Blue Blood Moon

Super Blue Blood Moon January 31st, 2018. Visible in the western hemisphere for the first time in 152 years. The U.S. won't see another super blue blood trio until 2037. The second full moon of the calendar month is called a blue moon. It is called a supermoon because it's especially close to the Earth, making it appear larger and brighter than usual. It was also a total lunar eclipse. That's why this is also called a blood moon As the moon makes this close, full moon approach to the Earth, it's going to pass through the Earth's shadow and the Earth's shadow is going to cause the moon to appear a deep red color.

Sculptural Beaty in Nature

I saw these white pelicans resting on the ground. I loved the lines of the neck tucked into the back wings. Loved the sculpture look of this composition.

Back Road Beauty

In my travels along back roads you pass small towns, old barns and if you get lucky a vintage truck or car. This beauty was on a small county road I took to travel from Gray Lodge Wildlife Refuge to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge.

Tundra Swans, Greater White-fronted Geese and Snow Geese

The Pacific Flyway is a major north-south flyway for migratory birds in America, extending from Alaska to Patagonia. Every year, migratory birds travel some or all of this distance both in spring and in fall, following food sources, heading to breeding grounds, or traveling to overwintering sites. Millions of birds – more than 350 species - follow the Pacific Flyway. In California birds migrate south as early as August and migrate north as early as March.

The Sacramento Valley provides critical habitat for migrating and resident species of waterfowl, geese, shorebirds and waterbirds. This habitat comprises an important part of the integrated water system in Northern California. The Sacramento Valley lies on the southerly end of the Pacific Flyway migratory route and is one the most prominent wintering sites for waterfowl in the world.

The areas I like to photograph during this migration is Gray Lodge Wildlife Refuge, Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and areas in Sutter, Butte and Glen counties.
